California Evidence Code section 754(g) provides that courts shall, in consultation with a party or witness who is deaf or hard of hearing, appoint an “intermediary interpreter” to assist in providing accurate interpretation between an individual party or witness who is deaf or hard of hearing and a qualified interpreter2 when that party or witness is not fluent in ASL.
