Certified American Sign Language Interpreter

How to Become a Certified American Sign Language Court Interpreter

Effective January 1, 2024, the Judicial Council recognizes the following credentials for certified American Sign Language (ASL) court interpreters:

  • Specialist Certificate: Legal (SC:L), formerly offered by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)
    • If you are an active SC:L certified interpreter and would like to enroll on our Master List of Certified Court and Registered Interpreters, please contact us and request an enrollment packet at courtinterpreters@jud.ca.gov
    • Once individuals successfully apply to CIP and are added to the Master List, they will be eligible to work in the California courts as a certified ASL court interpreter either in-person or remotely.

  • Texas Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) Court Interpreter Certification (CIC), offered by the Texas Office of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (DHHS)
    • Individuals who hold the Texas BEI CIC and are in good standing with Texas may apply for reciprocity to be added to the Master List.

    • CDIs who also possess the BEI CIC credential may also apply to be added to the council’s Master List.

    • Once individuals successfully apply to CIP and are added to the Master List, they will be eligible to work in the California courts as a certified ASL court interpreter either in-person or remotely.

You can find the council report here that led to the acceptance of the Texas BEI CIC credential. Read the Bulletin below for information on taking the Texas BEI CIC, applying for reciprocity as an ASL interpreter, and more.
